@afterthepandemic will curate a creative, cultural @afterthepandemic will curate a creative, cultural, and community hub for Glasgow in the run up to & during COP26.

The 3000sqm Clydeside space will put people and communities at the heart of the COP26 conversation. Curated by Glaswegians, for Glaswegians, the space will present global challenges at a local level, and engage with international communities from around the world.

For participation.

For parity.

For prosperity.

COP26 is the most significant international conference since COP21 in 2015 (where the Paris Agreement was signed), and takes place between 1 Nov and 12 Nov 2021

To mark five years since the Paris Agreement, we’ve created five principles that will guide our mission RETHINK, REIMAGINE and REDESIGN our spaces and places to be greener, more vibrant and more resilient.

These are After the Pandemic’s commitments to COP26 and beyond.

1. Inclusive Communities
For all: Contribute to and connect with global communities by empowering Glasgow’s own.

2. Dear Greenest Place
Carbon reduction is an even more urgent issue now than it was at COP21. After the Pandemic backs Glasgow’s commitment to becoming a net-zero city by 2030.

3. Local for Global
For global change, start local: tackle climate change from the grassroots up.

4. Learn & Grow
Educate and pollinate. Develop skills and share knowledge to enable action.

5. Design-Forward
Catalyse Glasgow’s creative community powerhouses to REDESIGN the future.

Brian - Pandemics and climate change are both consequences of humanities interaction. And countries can’t hide behind their borders, climate change and pandemics either. So more recognition of the importance of international community and local community is the single biggest thing that needs to come out of lockdown and getting through the pandemic.

EMERGING FROM LOCKDOWN
Barrington Reeves - I think it’s given a lot of Barrington Reeves - I think it’s given a lot of people confidence to talk and be vulnerable for the first time, people have been a lot more open in sharing problems and anxieties, it’s kind of a collective healing essentially.

We’ve been working on the Emerging from Lockdown series of films focusing on Glasgow’s residents experiences as we emerge from lockdown. It’s been amazing hearing everyone’s experiences, thoughts and hopes for Glasgow’s future as time moves on.
Blood, Sugar, Money, Bricks. @vasantha_piyasena Blood, Sugar, Money, Bricks.

@vasantha_piyasena and Sonny, his 12 year old son, pulled together this humbling and inspiring project for the After the Pandemic Summer School to explore how augmented reality could highlight Glasgow's past relationship with the Transatlantic slave trade.

Utilising the technology, you, the user, would be able to add an extra digital layer of history to the built environment. The proposal would see your app respond to the existing buildings and structures associated with this part of Glasgow city's history.

The After the Pandemic Summer School was developed alongside @thedesignweans and part of the wider After the Pandemic initiative which is run by ourselves @stradenmoncrieff and @lauramchard

‘It is an artist's duty to reflect the times in which we live.’ Nina Simone

"Our project explores the use of new digital mediums – virtual, augmented and mixed realities to reveal how Glasgow was shaped by and involved in the Transatlantic slave trade.

The proposal explores different ways of viewing  the city through the creative arts, providing an engaging way to recontextualise our surroundings, revealing a hidden layer of history which is currently absent and creating an evolving platform for underrepresented voices.

In the 16th century ideas were developed by the British Empire and written into law in order to justify the enslavement of African people. Created hundreds of years ago these ideas underpin racist actions that affect people’s lives today.

We believe that one of the vital steps to addressing the current issues of inequality in society is educating ourselves about our history."

AFTER THE PANDEMIC: GreenSpan Today, the Kingston AFTER THE PANDEMIC: GreenSpan

Today, the Kingston Bridge celebrates its 50th anniversary. Over 150,000 cars cross the bridge daily. Should this still be the case after the pandemic? Do we really want 150,000 cars polluting the city centre of Glasgow every day? Or can we RE-DESIGN our grey arteries to be a lot greener? Can the bridge be more human in scale - and can it be used by the people who make Glasgow?
During lockdown our roads have been quieter, our cities have been healthier, so can we use this moment, this ‘Great Pause’ to RE-IMAGINE every part of our city to be greener and more resilient? Can the 60th anniversary of the Kingston Bridge be a celebration of a bridge transformed - a bridge used on which the tread is our feet rather than our tyres? Could the Kingston Bridge be a lot more like this?
After the Pandemic is an initiative developing community focused, design-led projects which can transform our towns, cities and countries into greener, sustainable and more resilient places to live, work and play.
