What if Orkney became a Singapore of the north? 
Strategically positioned to take advantage of shifting patterns in international shipping, Orkney could become a network city, with one of the world’s great natural harbours at its heart.
A light rail system would connect existing communities, transporting local people, visitors and cargo around the archipelago. This new infrastructure would allow for the development of other resources (energy, water) to flow along its route.
The proposal reflects on the strong industrial and maritime heritage of Orkney, once again filling Scapa Flow with activity, and placing Orkney and Scotland at the centre of a geo-politically and environmentally changing north.
This project was developed alongside Alex Hobday as part of the architectural masters programme at the University of Strathclyde focusing on Uncertain Futures and design-led responses. The project was presented at the Scottish Parliament in May 2013 as part of the Nordic Horizons lecture series.
